The Monday Playlist: Sabrina Carpenter, Alice Merton, Zak Abel and more...
(Yes, I know it's Tuesday)
Yes, I know it’s Tuesday, but I occasionally like to engage in life/having fun so didn’t quite find the time over the weekend to get this ready for yesterday. Please don’t let my personal lack of organisation get in the way of you enjoying the best new songs that came out last week - and buckle in because there’s over 45 minutes of new music about to come your way.
Here’s the playlist for this week, thanks for subscribing!
Hero/Island by Alice Merton - two for one special on new songs from personal favourite Alice Merton. Couldn’t pick, so here they both are: Hero is a little extra-terrestrial bit of pop, whereas Island is a bit more in the lane of Florence Welch
Damn It Feels Good To Be Me by Andy Grammer - seems like Andy Grammer is trying to emulate Macklemore on this one, can’t decide if I love it or loathe it, either way: here it is
Movie by Blake Rose - gorgeous little pop ballad from Blake Rose asking the very important question: ‘When your life flashed before your eyes/Do you like who you’re with in that movie/Or do you belong in mine?’
Ghost Story (with All Time Low) by Cheat Codes - a bit of a banger this one I think, some characteristically emo lyrics courtesy of All Time Low
Shivers by Ed Sheeran - Is Ed Sheeran as good as he is successful? Anyone else presenting this wouldn’t even scrape a top 40 spot, and yet this is on course for number one. That’s not to say it isn’t quite good, just trying to get a realistic gauge on how *good* it actually is
I’m Sorry by Josef Salvat - a nice wee broody pop banger, rhythmically synonymous with The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights
Stormy Skies (Diamonds) by Josie Mann - a cute little pop song with a very gentle vocal, the melody is really sweet
Love Goes Down by KID ETERNAL - just a senseless EDM banger, if you need another high octane stretch on your workout mix this one will more than suffice
Ghosted by Michael Aldag - a great selection of tongue-in-cheek lyrics on this one, especially: ‘I lose at least a couple braincells every time she speaks/I wanna kiss her but she hasn’t closed her mouth in weeks’
Silk Chiffon (feat. Phoebe Bridgers) by MUNA - would love to see if silk chiffon sales have increased since the release of this excellent cry-pop collab
Skinny Dipping by Sabrina Carpenter - pleasantly surprised at how good this one is, unsurprising to learn that Julia Michaels + JP Saxe are behind it, but feels like a good pivot from Carpenter in the way she talks through the verses, a favourite this week
Nobody Has To Know by Thomas Headon - a nice little alt-pop song, the kind of thing NME would lose its mind over in 2006
Angel Baby by Troye Sivan - the gay version of Berlin’s Take My Breath Away
Less Of A Man by Zak Abel - an upbeat, James-Morrion-esque blue-eyed soul song that confronts toxic masculinity. Hugely singable, hard to believe they didn’t shoehorn a gospel choir into it, Abel’s voice sounds fantastic
